NASA’s Parker Solar Probe, a historic mission that will revolutionize our understanding of the Sun, is scheduled to launch on Saturday, Aug. 11. The first launch opportunity is at 3:33 a.m. EDT, at the opening of a 65-minute window. The spacecraft will launch on a United Launch Alliance Delta IV Heavy rocket from Space Launch Complex 37 on Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. The deadline for media to apply for accreditation for this launch has passed.

When Falcon Heavy lifts off, it will be the most powerful operational rocket in the world by a factor of two. With the ability to lift into orbit nearly 64 metric tons (141,000 lb)---a mass greater than a 737 jetliner loaded with passengers, crew, luggage and fuel--Falcon Heavy can lift more than twice the payload of the next closest operational vehicle, the Delta IV Heavy, at one-third the cost.

Falcon Heavy's first stage is composed of three Falcon 9 nine-engine cores whose 27 Merlin engines together generate more than 5 million pounds of thrust at liftoff, equal to approximately eighteen 747 aircraft.

Following liftoff, the two side boosters separate from the center core and return to landing sites for future reuse. The center core, traveling further and faster than the side boosters, also returns for reuse, but lands on a drone ship located in the Atlantic Ocean.

At max velocity the Roadster will travel 11 km/s (7mi/s) and travel 400 million km (250 million mi) from Earth.

Falcon Heavy was designed from the outset to carry humans into space and restores the possibility of flying missions with crew to the Moon or Mars.

Since 2004, NASA's Cassini spacecraft has been orbiting Saturn making amazing discoveries about the planet's swirling storms, menagerie of moons, and radical ring system. The Cassini mission recently ended on September 15, 2017 when the spacecraft dove into the cloud tops of Saturn; leaving behind a wake of scientists’ tears and hopeful predictions for the future of planetary science. Many of the lessons of Saturn can be applied elsewhere in our solar system and to worlds around other stars, including giant planet weather patterns, moon construction, and potential habitable environments. Dr. Meinke will strive to condense this historic 13 year voyage into 45 minutes as she celebrates the highlights of a mission that changed our understanding of the solar system.

SpaceX’s new Falcon Heavy space rocket has launched on its maiden flight. The rocket departed from Launch Pad 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, carrying a Tesla car into orbit. The launch was delayed twice due to heavy winds in the upper atmosphere, but the countdown finally began for a 3:45pm EST blastoff on Tuesday.
